Gender Gap in Sports

Do you remember the first time you played a sport? Maybe it was playing soccer with kids living on your block. Maybe it was shooting your first basketball after school with friends. Or maybe you decided to try out for the track and field team. Whatever the sport or physical activity, we know it was a big moment for you.

Sports is a gender equality issue. Girls and women face discrimination in pursuing and continuing with sports at every level. We at Girl Up believe that until we level the playing field for girls in sports, we won’t fully realize gender equality.

That’s why in 2019, Girl Up is excited to launch Sports for a Purpose to help Girl Up Club leaders like you take action to break down gender inequalities in sports. Why are we addressing sports? Because we – along with friends – want to create a culture of sports participation for girls around the world. Sports are a proven way to develop leadership skills, confidence, and positive self-image. Read our full statement on Girl Up's stance in addressing the gender gap in sports.
