Good News For Foreign Aid!

Great news! Thanks to your advocacy efforts, the foreign affairs budget for Fiscal Year 2017 (the fiscal year ends September 30, 2017) has been fully funded. This includes full funding for the UN regular budget and several UN agencies, including the UN’s Children Fund (UNICEF), the UN Development Program (UNDP), and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). Girl Up works with UNICEF in Guatemala, UNHCR in Uganda and Ethiopia, UNDP in India, and other UN programs around the world.

All your fundraising and advocating for legislation (Girls Count, Refugee Education, Child Marriage, etc.) allow the UN to carry out its mission of helping adolescent girls reach their full potential. These investments are less than 1% of our federal budget, but make a world of difference to girls in many countries around the world.

Strong funding for the foreign affairs budget is critical to helping the 130 million girls who are not in school, the 15 million girls who are forced into marriage before the age of 18 every year, and half of all of the 65 million refugees who are girls and women. Thank you for your support in helping to ensure the foreign affairs budget is fully funded.

Advocacy Action:  The one place the budget does fall short, is on fully funding the U.S. negotiated share of UN Peacekeeping operations. We are obligated to pay 28% of the U.N. Peacekeeping budget and will only be paying 25% in Fiscal Year 17. Peacekeepers decrease the number of people forced to flee their homes, by mitigating violence and working to create peace in unstable countries.

Please, urge your members of Congress to restore our nation’s commitment to the UN and UN Peacekeeping by paying our bills in full in Fiscal Year 2018.
